Who is Gen Z?
Generation Z is comprised of those born after 1996. This means the oldest members of this generation have just entered the workforce. Learn more about generation Z here!
Now check out 5 ways to begin engaging with them:
1. Create Tailored Volunteer Opportunities
A large portion of Generation Z is currently in high school or college. Many schools have a required amount of volunteer hours that each student needs to complete. Capitalize on this requirement by creating volunteer programs designed specifically for generation Z and their schedules! Once they complete this volunteer experience, they are one step closer to becoming major donors in the future.
2. Form a Junior Board
Generation Z has valuable opinions that they are ready share! A junior board is a great way to give them responsibility and get them involved early. Plan meetings between both your boards to create networking opportunities.
3. Focus on Video Content
Generation Z has an average attention span of 8 seconds! The majority of this generation doesn’t know a world without smart phones and instant feedback to all communication. This generation cares, they just consume content differently! Short videos are a great way to get them engaged. Get to the point quickly and concisely while using text in a strategic way.
4. create “shareable” opportunities
Nobody will ever forget the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This campaign flooded our news feeds, but also raised some serious money for a great cause. This campaign was all about spreading awareness on social media, something generation Z is great at! Give generation Z a “social media challenge” so they can do the same for your nonprofit. It can be as simple as a hashtag, or as elaborate as getting ice water poured on their heads!
5. Hold Events!
Small-scale events are a great way to introduce generation Z to your nonprofit! These events can be a low-cost, low-effort way to begin relationship building. Here are some examples to help you get started:
Give them a tour of your office or work-site
Have a meet and greet with the population you serve
Invite them to sit in for a portion of a more important event or meeting
Hold a meet-up at a local coffee shop or restaurant
No matter which option you choose, always provide an opportunity for in-person giving; even smaller, $10 donations are impactful!
