6 Tips for Nonprofit "Gamification"
"Gamification" is a trend sweeping the nonprofit world! Using this strategy can help increase engagement from a wider pool of potential donors.
What is Gamification?
Gamification is when you add the typical elements of game play to other areas of life. These "elements" are all those things that make playing games so much fun! This can include anything from point scoring and prizes to leaderboards and level-ups. Adding these elements to your nonprofit fundraising strategy can help incentivize more people to get involved and stay committed to your cause.
1. Get local businesses involved
Cause marketing is a powerful tool and a great way to get your nonprofit in front of a whole new set of audiences. However, it can often be difficult to motivate businesses to come up with a compelling ask at the point of purchase. Gamify this scenario by pitting local businesses against each other to see which one is the top fundraiser! Make the businesses more motivated to "win" by offering prizes to the ones who help you rack in the most donations.
2. Publish a fundraising "Leaderboard"
People are often motivated by the idea of "winning" or being "number one," this idea still holds true when it comes to fundraising. Reward these top fundraisers by posting their names at the top of the leaderboard on your website, social media and at the events themselves.

You don't need to offer a prize to every single donor to to gamify an event! Cut costs by offering only a few larger items and create a fun way to choose the prize winner. 5. Encourage Fundraising Teams
People love belonging to a group. Even the most arbitrary of groups quickly begin to develop a sense of camaraderie and loyalty that can be extremely powerful when it comes to fundraising and volunteer work. This group mentality can be seen working across the board in service trips, marathon fundraising teams, greek life and even fundraisers simply pitting "Team A" against "Team B." At your next event, split the room into teams and watch the competitive spirit come out and the donations roll in!
6. Create fundraising levels
There's no better feeling than beating a level in a video game; give your donors the same feeling while they're fundraising! Create a tier or level system that gives donors additional perks when they cross the next fundraising threshold. This perks can be anything from entrance to the VIP section at your next event to the chance to meet one of the kids your nonprofit is working to support.
