Fundraising Pro Tip: Sell Beer at a Kids Museum

This week in our spotlight series on museums and educational nonprofits we are highlighting OH WOW! and how they raised $12,000 in one evening. Every year OH WOW! opens up their children's museum up to parents for food, drinks and fun, they just have one rule, no kids.

OH WOW! Children’s Center is holding their 6th Annual Science of Brewing fundraiser where they raise $12,000 in a night. For $60 a person, ticket holders are offered local beer, wine and spirit tastings, food pairings, live entertainment, basket raffles, a cash bar and best of all an empty museum.

An evening out away from the kids or a chance to meet other singles, attendees get to experience the museum in a whole new way; alone and with a beer in hand. They can roam through the 11 galleries, taking on the wind chamber or trying their hand at engineering in OH WOW!’s makerspace. It’s the one night a year they encourage you to leave your kids at home and enjoy the museum after hours.

Throughout the evening silent auctions and basket raffles are offered with the chance to win a getaway trip or a privately cooked dinner. The evening event is concluded with live music and the basket raffle winners.

OH WOW! uses the funds from Science of Brewing to keep their doors open and lights on. The money helps with basic operational needs like physical improvements, repairs, and programs enhancement.

Science of Brewing also helps subsidize costs for future children and field trips. A typical visit costs $8 a child and field trips at $5 a child. Since that isn’t possible for everyone they work to lower it to $3 a person so every child has the chance to visit. Along with a reduced ticket each student on a field trip receives a buy-one-get-one-free ticket so they can come back with their parents or friends.

In 2016 OH WOW! had over 10,000 kids and chaperones come through their doors and this year they are looking to double that! With fun events like Science of Brewing it keeps the community involved and costs low so everyone can enjoy OH WOW!
