Snapchat for Nonprofits
These days, it can be tough for nonprofits to find the most efficient (and easiest) way to connect with millennials. Snapchat is the social media platform millennials swear by and you can use that to your advantage. There are several reasons why Snapchat is an effective tool for nonprofits:
- Even if your donor base it typically on the older side, Snapchat can help you connect with new, younger audiences.
- Snapchat is the best tool for giving your audience "real-time" updates! It can help inspire those who couldn't make it to an event to still donate.
- Snapchat has great customizable features that help donors promote your nonprofit for you! One easy way to do this is by creating a Snapchat Geofilter; don't worry, we'll show you how to do it!
What is a Geofilter?
Snapchat is a platform that allows you to post “stories” which are photos that stay posted for 24 hours. These stories are easily accessible by anybody you are "friends with." Often times, people will put a Geofilter on their story. A geofilter is an animation that can be placed on top of any photo or video a person takes. They are a fun way for people to share where they are and what they're doing. Luckily, Geofilters are easy to create for events.
How Do I Create a Geofilter?
We'll show you in 5 easy steps. Our example is an imaginary DipJar Anniversary Celebration!
Go to create.snapchat.com, and click “Create Filter”.
Pick an appropriate celebration from the drop down menu or add your own design from Photoshop by clicking the “Upload” button. For the DipJar Anniversary example, I chose the dropdown option “Birthdays”.
Choose a template and play around with the color, elements, and text features on the top right of the page. You can insert your logo using the “elements” feature.
When you’re satisfied with your design, press “next” on the bottom right corner of the page and select a date or multiple dates that you’d like the Geofilter to be available on. This can be useful for fundraisers, marathons, benefit-walks and more.
Move onto the location page by clicking “next”. Type in an address and press enter then edit the fence around the area of interest like below. Notice how the fence above is around DipJar’s entire office and over the surrounding streets, allowing anyone in the area to share a picture with that filter. Lastly, press “checkout”.
Once you’ve created a design, people with Snapchat can share photos with your filter, increasing your nonprofits publicity and millennial interest. This will allow people to share that they attended your nonprofit’s event and let their friends know that they support your nonprofit. This can then influence and inspire their friends to take action or donate. Snapchat Geofilters are a quick and easy way to increase your millennial interest and event publicity.
