DipJar’s Giving Trend Reports: Q3 2022

DipJar Releases Data on Q3 2022 Giving Trends

Shifting patterns of “Dips” illustrate changes in giving priorities

PITTSBURGH, Pa., December 20, 2022 – DipJar, the leading giving technology platform for nonprofit organizations, today released details on giving trends for Q3, 2022. The numbers are based on more than 368,000 transactions (aka “dips”), contributing to more than $860,000 to over 3,000 organizations across the country. For the year-to-date, DipJar has helped nonprofits raise $5,719,177.08, a 32% increase as compared with the first three quarters of 2021.

There was a shift in the top categories during Q3. While socially-focused ($102K) and food-related ($94K) nonprofits remained among the top three, health-related organizations appeared at the top of the list for the first time, with more than $200K in donations for the quarter.

Category Q1 2022 Q2 2022 Q3 2022
Health-related  57,000 69,000 215,000
Socially-focused 88,000 207,000 102,000
Food-related 142,000 116,000 94,000

There was also a shift in regionality of the organizations receiving contributions through DipJar devices. The South was supplanted by the Northeast in this regard.

Region Q1 Q2 Q3
Northeast $90,208 $191,756 $285,746
South $293,123 $318,816 $272,054
Midwest $63,861 $142,542 $170,769
West $107,380 $168,256 $138,072

Even without these notable trends, there were other telling shifts in the data. For example, during Covid, food-related charities saw extraordinary support. In the first three quarters of 2021, food-related charities saw more than $800K in DipJar donations. In 2022, that number had declined to just over $350K, more than a 62 percent reduction year-over-year.

“Digging into these numbers provides a terrific snapshot of giving trends among our customers,” said Melissa Smith, vice president of marketing and strategy at DipJar. “The shift from food-related charities says something about food security and the impact of Covid. Now, we are seeing generosity spread more broadly across categories.”

DipJar has helped organizations of every size and variety – and located in every corner of America – raise tens of millions of dollars. From saving sea turtles in Florida to celebrating Pride in Utah to supporting a public library in Providence, DipJar is committed to providing the technology needed to receive donor support in a fun, sustainable, and effective way.

“The more we dive into this data, the more we come up with,” said Smith. “It can tell us not only what types of charities are attracting the largest number of donations but also the types of events and campaigns that are most effective. It’s fascinating.”
